Celebrating World Ocean day with Ooblek Play!

Happy World Oceans Day!

Today is World Oceans Day. A day where people all around he world join forces to provide understanding that preserving the ocean is crucial for our existence. They educate on things you can do to help save our oceans. Molly is only 17 months. So shes still a little young to understand, but it’s not too early to start educating her. I want to bring Molly up to love and respect our planet, and as she gets older I’ll teach her about sustainability and how single use plastics damage our ecosystem.

Ooblek

Today’s World Oceans Day activity involved Ooblek! Oobleck is that wonderful mixture you get when you combine water and cornflour. I used it for a Halloween play activity last year, but its so versatile that you can use and adapt it to fit any theme!

To make Ooblek, all you need is 2 cups of cornflour, 1 cup of water and some food colouring. I tend to mix the water and the food colouring together first and then add it slowly to the cornflour until I get the desired consistency.

I set up some Oobleck that I dyed blue to mimic the ocean into the tuff tray. Then I added sea creature and let Molly play freely. I would name each animal as she showed them too me. I had some sea themed music playing in the background to enhance the experience that little bit more.

Molly really enjoyed this activity. She started off being a little apprehensive about it all. But, it didn’t take her long to become completely covered. She found picking up the Ooblek and then letting run off her fingers hilarious. Then, she climbed up onto the table and decided to get completely covered in the Ooblek!! To be honest, the more mess the better! It’s activities like this love watching her imagination run wild, and hearing her talking to herself as she plays.

Does your little one enjoy playing with Ooblek gloop?
